Los hábitos y el ejemplo de amigos, parientes y colegas son un factor determinante para la adopción de actitudes relacionadas al comportamiento sostenible durante el dia a dia según el estudio “Caminos hacia estilos de vida sostenibles”. Se entrevistó a varios hombres y mujeres de un grupo de diferentes edades y clases sociales, la mitad de ellos ya practicaban de alguna forma en ese tipo vida y la otra mitad no. Esta investigación consiguió identificar nueve factores que son propicios para la adopción de actitudes más sostenibles y seis situaciones que hacen adoptar esta forma de vida más difícil. El lanzamiento de esto marca el Dia del Consumo Conciente celebrado hoy, día 15.
De acuerdo con los resultados de las entrevistas, alguien intentando sentirse como parte de un grupo asumirá una de dos actitudes, podría tomar acción en pro de la sustentabilidad o podrá evitar cambiar sus hábitos, “Lo mucho que una persona logre sentirse parte del grupo puede afectar o ayudar mucho. Al hablar de grupo no nos referimos necesariamente a una familia, puede ser un grupo de amigos, de trabajo, en las escuela de los hijos” resalta la gerente de comunicación del instituto Akatu, Gabriela Yamaguchi. Akatu es una organización no gubernamental que trabaja por la concientización de la sociedad sobre el consumo consciente.
Los siguientes fueron los factores identificados que favorecen la práctica de actitudes sostenibles: la posibilidad de que tales acciones tornen la vida más simple, el balance positivo de cambiar de hábito, ya sea económico, por su practicidad o comodidad, la oportunidad de contribuir para mejorar el mundo, inspirar a otras personas, sentirse como ‘arte de algo mayor, la sensación de cambia la vida propia positivamente y la posibilidad de comenzar con pasos pequeños.
Entre los factores que afectan negativamente se identificaron la percepción de incomodidad con las nuevas prácticas, obstáculos físicos (edad, salud y condición física) limitaciones en el espacio donde se reside, cuanto se valora culturalmente la limpieza (es un problema debido a la reducción del uso de agua y energía eléctrica) y la sensación de aislamiento.
Según el estudio participar en la separación de los residuos y reciclar son actividades que llevan a que las personas piensen en el uso racional de los recursos. “El primer paso es el reciclaje, el trato adecuado de los residuos. Las personas que ya conocen y participan más de estas prácticas probablemente ya entiendan como reciclar, para ellos será más fácil dar los primeros pasos, ellos también estarán más abiertos a dar los siguientes pasos” Destaca Gabriela Yamaguchi.
El profesor del instituto de Energía y Ambiente de la universidad de São Paulo, Ricardo Abramovay, nos recuerda que las empresas también juegan un papel fundamental en cuanto a la adopción de nuevos hábitos en la población. “Los cambios en el comportamiento de las empresas son determinados en gran parte por aquello que las personas están haciendo, sin embargo al hablar de cambios en el comportamiento de las personas corremos el riesgo de invertir esa ecuación. Pero en realidad son las empresas que se adaptan a las preferencias de las personas”, explica Abramovay.
Gabriela también nos recuerda el papel de las empresas. “En cuanto mas productos y servicios sostenibles sean ofrecidos por las empresas mas facil será para los consumidores adoptarlos. Las empresas son facilitadores de las prácticas sostenibles en las casas de las personas” según Gabriela. Además de ofrecer los productos Gabriela también resalta la importancia de lo que comunican las campañas de estas, las campañas comunican las razones de escoger caminos más sostenibles. “Las investigaciones tienen ese objetivo: ayudar a las empresas que ha están lanzando tales productos para que sean divulgados de manera tal que las personas entiendan la importancia de escogerlos y de cambiar a prácticas mas sostenibles”.
