Agroforestry is one of our main projects at Eco Caminhos. Our goal with this project is to grow a wide variety of edible plants, fruits, and vegetables, while simultaneously helping with the preservation of the biodiversity of the endemic ecosystem of the region. With this initiative, we are looking to find a balance between agriculture and the environment.
Our forestry engineer Bruno Nirello and agronomist Anastasia Almeida planned and initiated this project. The two specialists completed a complex, well-defined plan of this initial local Agroforestry field. Here, we will continue to plant a great variety of plants and trees. We have planted them in locations by combining their heights in order to increase cooperation and growth. The field has spaces for fruit trees, sustainable wood production, as well as medicinal plants and vegetables. There are many plants that produce the necessary fertilizer and biomass for the entire area.
Our field is located on the outer mountains of Nova Friburgo and will benefit from the steep terrain using gravity for the irrigation system. This removes the need for water pumps and instead uses micro dropping polypropylene tapes for irrigation.
We began the process at the beginning of June 2018. First, we started with getting the land and soil ready for the first plants; Mexican Sunflower, Black Oats and Tremoço. Afterward, we installed underground irrigation tubing. Once a week when all the volunteers get together, we work together to turn this Agroforestry into a reality.
