Caledônia
With an altitude of 2,257 meters, Pico da Caledônia features a staircase with 631 steps leading to the mountain’s summit, making it the 2nd highest mountain in the Serra do Mar range. It offers a panoramic view of mountains, valleys, and the typical Atlantic Forest vegetation, making it one of the most stunning views in Nova Friburgo.
The trail to Pico Caledônia is considered moderate to difficult due to the steep climb, taking about 2 to 3 hours to reach the top. The trail crosses sections of dense Atlantic Forest, providing an opportunity to appreciate the diversity of native vegetation, accompanied by the soothing sounds of waterfalls and streams descending from the mountains, creating a serene natural setting.
The granite mountain range known as Três Picos (Smaller, Medium, and Larger Peaks), located in the Três Picos State Park in Nova Friburgo, is one of the most impressive and iconic rock formations of the Serra dos Órgãos. It is considered the largest rock formation in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with an altitude of approximately 2,366 meters. The trail takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete from the starting point in Salinas. This section is rated as moderate difficulty and includes steep climbs.
On the way to the Três Picos, you pass through dense Atlantic Forests, open high-altitude fields, and impressive rock formations. The fauna is diverse, with opportunities to spot native birds and small mammals. Natural viewpoints and camping areas offer breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
At the top, visitors are rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view, which includes the city of Nova Friburgo, the surrounding mountains, and, on clear days, even part of the coastline. The spacious and flat summit is perfect for rest, picnics, or admiring the sunrise or sunset. It is an unmissable experience for nature and tranquility lovers.
With a 2 km stretch and a maximum altitude of 1,550 meters, the trail offers spectacular views along the way. It spans approximately 5 to 6 km, taking an average of 1 to 2 hours to ascend. The location is known both for its distinctive shape, resembling a pointed hat, and for the panoramic views it offers throughout the route and at the summit.
The trail is rated as moderate difficulty, ideal for adventurers with good physical fitness. During the hike, it’s possible to observe the rich local fauna and flora, enhancing the special experience.
Along the route, which crosses the lush Atlantic Forest, visitors are surrounded by rich biodiversity. Natural viewpoints along the way provide partial views of the Serra dos Órgãos and Nova Friburgo, offering perfect moments to pause, enjoy the scenery, and take photographs.
